What a fun weekend coming up: Halloween (free candy! mmm!); for those of us in DC, the Rally to Restore Sanity; gorgeous weather (70s in DC?); and maybe even some downtime to take in all the gorgeous fall colors around us. I'm definitely ready.
Hope you all have an equally awesome weekend. See you back here Monday!
Hello all and TGIF! Happy almost-Halloween weekend!
I lurv Halloween - always have - I mean, what's not to love about dressing up in a fun costume and getting free candy? Sounds pretty ideal to me. I am kind of sad we're too old to go trick-or-treating these days (well, I could probably still pass for a high schooler, but old man weird beard [ahem, that's you, love] might stand out), but we can still do some little stuff around the house. I hate to say it, but we actually haven't carved pumpkins this year (maybe sometime before Sunday??) and I haven't gone too overboard with decorating or the like.
Here is my one little Halloween vignette: Spooky, eh? Yeah yeah, I know it's kind of a half-a$sed Halloween set-up, but what can you do? Gourd + plastic pumpkin (he makes an appearance every year) + spooky glitter skull (which was an awesome find, here) on an upside-down bowl = I tried. It is what it is. I kind of like it though... And don't our silhouettes look kind of creepy/dead relative-ish? :)
The one effort I have made was in the kitchen. Yesterday I got the baking bug and decided to whip up some homemade "boo pies" (I have no idea what to call them - they're sort of halfway between whoopie pies [but not as cake-y] and Oreos [but not as crunchy]) - whatever you call 'em, they are were gooood (just ask Sara).
Here's proof that I made these mammers from scratch: Cooling.
Patiently waiting while I mixed up the cream cheese filling by hand.
Assembled. (A tad sloppy, but it was my first attempt at this!)
Halloween-ed up.
The only trouble is that I have this left over: A decent portion of handmade cream cheese filling. There's about a million pounds of cream cheese, butter and confectioner's sugar just waiting to go straight to my a$s. It's all I can do not to dig in with a spoon. Oy.
Have you all gotten into the Halloween mood yet? Without kids, I feel slightly strange getting too amped up over it, but I am looking forward to this weekend... In the meantime, see you all back here in a bit!
Doves, it's been grand, but I'm off for a girls' weekend in New York. We're truly taking advantage of the Columbus Day hoiday and staying through Monday, so we'll have an entire extra morning in the city. Woohoo! I doubt we'll actually be riding bikes around town like this adorable girl, but it seemed like such a fun (and fashionable, in this pic!) way to flit about the city that I couldn't not include it.
If we're lucky, we'll see fall in full force like this:
Though I'd even settle for moody evenings like this: Either way, I know I'll have a great time with friends, running around the city, eating, shopping, and talk, talk, talking. Oh and did I mention eating? Can't wait!
Hope you have a great weekend. Since we're staying in the city an extra day, I'll see you back here Tuesday!
This reusable canvas shopping bag by Riley Noehren on Etsy is totally cute and pretty green. I would totally work it at the farmers market - imagine it filled to the brim with fresh, seasonal local veggies, hanging from my beloved scooter as I zip home - so cute, no? Of course this vision would mean I'd actually have to get out of bed before 11am on a Sunday morning, and I wouldn't hold your breath for that... but the bag is cute nonetheless. ;)
Wellll, I'm just a wee bit (*cough*)late in wishing you all a happy weekend (considering the weekend will officially be over in an hour!), but I wanted to do so anyway. Our weekend was a whirlwind of travel, football, and my sweet B's birthday (happy {undisclosed age}, love!), so I'm a little late in getting to it. But I hope your days off were great regardless!
B and I drove up to Penn State on Friday evening to see his sister, her new baby and the fam, and to tailgate for the PSU/Temple game Saturday afternoon. I desperately wanted to bring these fun new Oreos (spotted on Jaimee Rose's fun blog) - they're in the shape of footballs, people! Fun with a capital F! - but after running around town and searching for them in six - count 'em six - stores, I realized they were nowhere to be found around Naptown. B's sis informs me they're sold out throughout Penn State as well. Boo hoo. Aren't they cute though? And the perfect Sunday football snack? Photos from Jaimee Rose
Harumpf.
So my early-Fall dreams of the perfect tailgate are only slightly dashed (we somehow managed to deal without these Oreos and had a lot of fun anyway, in case you were wondering). There are many more weeks of football (ugh, oh somany) ahead and at least a few more beautiful Indian summer-like days in the forecast as well.
As Monday rolls around, here's wishing you a wonderful week (and dreams of Oreos?).
Do you ever feel like this after a long holiday weekend? Photo via quite cheeky.
I do. We had a great holiday weekend, filled with gorgeous weather, lots of time out on the water, a festive 4th of July fireworks show (both downtown and an unsolicited show in our parking lot), tons of food, friends and some downtime for B (I had to work while everyone else was off - boohoo). And even though the weekend was great - and I loved having everyone around for the additional day off - I'm still moving kind of slowly this morning. If only there was one. more. day. off.... ;)
Nonetheless, I'm getting back into the swing of things and will be back in a bit. Check back!
I'm hard at work trying to wrap things up before the holiday weekend (which, I will unfortunately be working during as well...), but I hope you're already out there enjoying this gorgeous day. B and I have some great plans coming up this weekend, including lots of eating outside on the water, boating, hosting a friend (the very guy that introduced us, in fact), and some good-old fashioned fireworks watching. I hope you have some awesome plans too and happy 4th of July! Photos from Martha, via Ritzy Bee
We've got a watermelon sitting in our kitchen and it needs a purpose. We originally bought it for B's baseball game on Sunday, but ran out of time and didn't cut it open. But, thanks to Logan, I think I've found just the thing for it: Photo from Food Network (follow the link for a Watermelon Sour recipe too!)
Brills, right? Cut a hole in the top of the watermelon, scoop out most of the pulp, insert keg tap and fill with a tasty bev. This is such an awesome summer drink vessel - perfect for a hot day, party or any lazy afternoon - and just in time for the 4th of July weekend. Love it!
B and I have a wedding to go to today, so we are on our way up to Philadelphia as you read this. I'm excited to hang out with friends, to celebrate the lovely (and miniature) couple, and to enjoy what will no doubt be a gorgeous and fun wedding.
With that being said, I'm out like a trout (hello sixth grade, I'm bringing that saying back!) a bit early today. Hope you have a great weekend in store - be sure to check out the USA World Cup game on Saturday at 2pm! - and see you Monday!
We're heading to a wedding this weekend (baaack to Phila), so I've been plotting my outfit. Given the current (and oh-so-fun) economic situation, I'll be wearing one of the dresses I already own - which is totally fine, since I own 8 gajillion (yes, that is a technical term) dresses from the 11 weddings we attended in the past two years (true story). Not one to do a full repeat, I'm looking for something to mix things up a bit. Accessories to the rescue.
I'm thinking of adding a belt and maybe a cardi for the ceremony, and of course, I'll layer on scads of baubles to make it fun and festive. I won't be buying a new purse, but if I had a few extra duckets (42 to be exact), I'd snap up one of these adorable purses from Bagatelles & Co. to compliment the ensemble. At only 42 bucks and offered in a plethora of adorable patterns, wouldn't they make excellent gifts? (I'm thinking they'd be the perfect bridesmaids gifts.) Aren't they sweet and fun?
(And don't you love my excessive use of parentheticals in this post??)
This weekend was a blur. I felt like it was over before it even got started. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that we were in four cities (and two states) in two days, including making a mid-night drive from PA to MD on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Ah, the life of a baseballer's wife girlfriend. I've since felt like I needed a few days to recuperate. Today is sunny (and hotttt) and I'm feeling a bit more recharged, so here I am, back on the interwebs!
Ignoring the terrifying things from this weekend like the giant cheesesteak I consumed, a whirlwind bachelorette night on the town, visiting a 12-day-old baby that looked like an old man, and the aforementioned drive through the night, I do have one lovely memory from Saturday afternoon: raspberry picking.
B's dad is a prolific organic gardener, with a backyard that yields all kinds of delicious things. Is it possible that I've been alive this many years and I never knew about golden raspberries? Photo from Dabbles with Apples
We picked them right off the bush and ate them, standing there in the middle of the backyard. They were so sweet and huge.
When we got back to Annapolis, I promptly went to the grocery store Sunday evening and bought a slew of berries. I couldn't find golden raspberries in my crapola Giant (especially on a Sunday - I think their produce comes in on Mondays - oops), but the regular raspberries I got were pretty good too. Photo from Inchmark
Mmm. We've already demolished the entire stash of berries, but I'm planning to buy more soon, and in the meantime, I'm still thinking about those golden raspberries, fresh off the bush. (Perhaps a Whole Foods trip is in order...)
Thank you, summer. I've been waiting for you and your bounty of berries.
Hello, girls and boys! I'll be honest, this post is coming to you from my iPhone because, well, it's Friday and it is bea-youu-tiful out. It's a big weekend - we're celebrating a friend's birthday tonight, then I'm off to Phila for a bachelorette party and Sunday is Father's Day for everyone. Yikes, busy busy! Fingers crossed this gorgeous weather continues, and here's wishing you a great weekend!
Isn't this photo lovely? It makes me think of road-tripping in the summer with the windows down and heading someplace fun. I can't wait to get away for our beach trip in August. Until then, though, I'm just enjoying the good weather (it's been unusually non-boiling-and-curl-your-hair-humid for June in MD - how about where you are?) and trying to soak up as much of the weekends as I can (when I'm not working).
Here's wishing you an amazing weekend. I'll be back Monday. Until then, go Team USA (don't forget - World Cup Soccer starts Saturday!).
I am running off to a busy day, but I'll be back a bit later today - at least to wish you a happy weekend - so check back in (when you're pretending to work but really just obsessively watching the clock to see if it's 5:30 yet...). ;)
I've been thinking about summertime and all the good things that come with it for a while now (ignore the sky-high temps, sticky humidity and frizzy hair, and instead think about outdoor concerts, beach trips and summer farmers' markets). Summer is now officially in full swing - hot hot hot during the day - but the nights have still been relatively cool and perfect for lounging outside, making me go from thinking about the coming summer to dreaming of a proper backyard to hang out in during starry summer evenings and mellow summer weekends.
Wouldn't any of these three backyard room be the perfect place to hang out?: Designed by Mary McGee, spotted on SHELTER.
Love the idea of a having seagrass or sisal rug outdoors and underfoot, paired with crisp whites and awesome pillows (don't they look totally lounge-worthy?).
This is actually the backyard of Jenna Lyons (Creative Director at J. Crew) - and it's in New York - who has that kind of outdoor space in the city?? It's basically an urban oasis. I die for the staircase and the lovely cherry blossom tree.
And finally, some built-in entertainment: Photo from Country Living magazine, of the backyard of West Elm Creative Director Alex Bates' Fire Island home.
I don't really play chess, but I might make an exception in this gorgeous setting.
Ah, someday... a girl can dream... (maybe they'll have invented mini outdoor AC units by then too...)
I am jetting off to a baseball game - the O's vs. the Red Sox at Camden Yards (go Sox!) - so I'm closing up shop a bit early today. I hope you're all heading out soon too and getting on with enjoying the weekend ASAP. It's gonna be another hot one, which (hopefully) means sailing, drinks by the water, maybe jumping off some docks, and generally relaxing (let's just pretend I'm not working this weekend too - boo).
Hope you have a great one and see you back here Monday! xo, r.
It's been raining here since last night, but I just checked the weather and it's supposed to hit 91 degrees on Monday. Looks like it'll be a true, summery Memorial Day. With the weather and that milestone holiday, that means summer is officially upon us! I don't know how we skipped right from chilly and cold to sunny and hot, but I'm not complaining - I love summer!
Here's wishing you all a fabulous weekend and an awesome long holiday weekend.
Three, two, one - it's almost Memorial Day weekend - woohoo! And yet these numbers aren't just a countdown to the holiday weekend (aka the official start of summer - yesss!), they're actually really cool stand-up vintage aluminum numbers.
There are letters too: These are obviously being shown with a wedding in mind, but I think they could be cool for lots of things. How about on your desk, or one letter for each guest at a dinner party, or even on the wall above a coat hook to delineate your kids' belongings?
For some reason the font choice is so appealing to me. I especially love the ampersand: Sets of these vintage numbers or letters are available to buy on Etsy (just use the links to the left). Can you think of some other cool uses for these? Or are you too busy counting down to Memorial Day? ;) Originally spotted on d. Sharp Journal.
Goooood morning, poppets! Happy Monday! Did you have a good weekend? I did, but I'm pretty exhausted - who knew working seven days a week for several weeks in a row could be so utterly draining? (Wait, I did - that's why I've never done it before. Blerrgg. ;) )
Anyway, I did get to enjoy the beautiful weather on Saturday and am hoping to see a glimpse of it again this morning before the rain is supposed to roll back in. In the meantime, though, why don't we take a second to skim through these awesome thoughts from some wise guys (literally, wise men)?
Top quote by Ghandi (a wise man indeed), found here. Bottom quote unknown, but found here.
I have a bunch more coming today, so check back in a bit. Hope you have a good Monday!
